GAA Report 1997
1997 was a very busy year for Doon G.A.A. Club. The U.12 team comfortably
retained their eastern title. They defeated South Liberties in final. We also
entered an U.12 B team who performed quite well and were only defeated in East
Final by Ahane A team. In a quite outstanding achievement the team also won the
Supermac's sponsored towns tournament which had entries from all over Ireland.
The U.14's had quite a successful season winning the Eastern Feile competition
before being narrowly defeated by Na Piarsaigh in the semi final. In the U.14
championship Doon qualified for the County final for the second successive year
before being defeated by an excellent Kilmallock team. Success finally came our
way when Doon defeated Na Piarsaig in the final of the All-County league. This
was our first success at County level in this grade since 1977. Panel: Ml.

Our U.16 team found it difficult to make an impact in the county championship.
We were defeated in our opening two games and we were eliminated from the
competition after we failed to get a postponement from Newcastlewest when
several of our players were involved in Community Games on same day. In the
Minor Championship we qualified for knockout stages by defeating Patrickswell,
Kilmallock, Knockainey, Mungret, Croom and drawing with Cappamore. We were
defeated in semi-final by Adare. In U.21 we retained our East title by defeating
Cappamore but lost to Patrickswell in the County semi-final. Our adult teams had a
busy time but were not particularly successful. Our senior selectors opted for a
relatively young and inexperienced team and while our year was not too
successful in terms of trophies won the performance of the younger players gave
considerable hope for the future. In the senior championship we defeated
Southern Gaels, Dromard and Kileedy and drew with St. Davids to emerge as
winners of our group. In the County quarter final we were defeated by Kilmallock
by two points. We were badly hampered during the year by the unavailability of
Tadgh
Hayes for a number of games.
In the Junior A championship Doon
were beaten by Ahane. We later
retained the Brian Butler Cup by
defeating Fedamore.
In the Junior B championship Doon
defeated Pallasgreen before going out
to Cappamore in the semi-final.
During the year quite a few players were honoured by selection for county teams.
